GRD Skate Clinics are held at Westside School in Hood River , Or.
Our junior league is open to youth of all genders between the ages of 7-17. Our juniors program is focused on teaching the fundamentals of roller derby and teamwork. We offer three levels of play (no contact, modified contact, and full contact) which is assessed based on the player’s ability and parental comfort level. Skaters may participate as players, officials, or support the team in other capacities
Practices are held weekly for 2 hours on Sunday afternoons at the Hood River Armory, Westside Elementary School, or The Dalles Readiness Center.
Junior bouts are held roughly 3 times a year within the Columbia River Gorge and surrounding area.
We also offer summer derby camps and skating clinics.
Safety is our number one priority so full safety gear is required for youth to participate. This includes: skates, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a mouth guard, and a certified helmet. A detailed list of recommended gear can be provided upon request. We understand that gear is expensive, especially with rapidly growing kids. We make every effort to outfit youth using our gear locker and facilitate gear swaps amongst families.
Dues are $45/month, which covers the cost of insurance, facilities and other league operating expenses. All coaches are volunteer coaches. Financial assistance is available for youth who need it. We believe finances should not be an obstacle to playing roller derby so please reach out to us if you have questions or concerns about cost.
We’d like our skaters to attend as many practices as possible, as skaters are safest and able to grow the most when they are skating regularly. However, we understand many of our families are very scheduled and conflicts will arise. Practice is currently 2 hours once a week.
Junior League is focused on teaching our skaters the fundamentals of roller derby. We strive to provide as many local opportunities to play as possible. Opportunities to play outside of the immediate Columbia Gorge area may arise, but these will be limited in frequency and driving distance.
In Junior League, safety is our top priority. We use a rubric to ensure that junior skaters are grouped by size and ability so that everyone can stay safe and develop their skills and confidence.
Like all contact sports roller derby carries some risk. We utilize a skills progression protocol to ensure that skaters are placed in environments that are matched to their abilities. This means skaters will not be placed in partial or full contact scenarios until they can demonstrate safety on skates and other foundational skills. The safety and wellbeing of our skaters is our top priority and skaters are always free to remove themselves from drills if they feel uncomfortable.
We understand that kids are growing and that gear can be costly. We encourage families to acquire their own gear but will strive to accommodate gear loans whenever possible. Proper fit is key, so please let our coaching staff and volunteers know if you have any questions about gear. You can access our gear checklist HERE.
Other than gear, there is no additional cost outside of monthly dues. We strive to keep the sport as affordable as possible for families.
